Part 2

As Ben tee’d off to begin the Oakland Open, his mind kept racing back to the car. He knew he had put this woman through hell and back and now he had to admit he was wrong for coming to Oakland. His childlike mind could not process what Valarie processed very easily. The trip was over As Ben teed off to begin the Oakland Open, his mind kept racing back to the car. He knew he had put this woman through hell and back and now he had to admit he was wrong for coming to Oakland. His childlike mind could not process what Valarie processed very easily. The trip was over, it was time to go home. Only now he had no way to get home…he had no money for the tires for the car, he didn’t even have a jack to put the tires on.
After he finished his first round of the tournament, he hitched a ride back to the motel and he saw a sight that broke his heart. Valarie was leaning on the car, crying her eyes out. Ben jumped out of his ride and ran over to embrace her. He said to her, “Valarie, everything is going to be OK, I promise you. Everything was going to be OK.” She turned from him and ran into the motel still crying.
Ben got a ride back to the course and practiced until dark. Over the next three days, Ben and Valarie didn’t speak. On the fourth day, the final day of the tournament, Ben came out swinging. The whole long trip, from Texas, to New York, Ohio, and the final stop in California, were much more than he could take. He did the only thing he knew he could do and dug deep down into his soul and found the courage to shoot the best round of his life in tournament play. He won $384. It was the biggest check he had ever seen in his whole life. So he did what any red blooded American at that time would do. He walked into the Oakland Country Club, called Valerie to come over, sat down and ordered the most expensive dinner on the menu and a bottle of champagne for him and his bride. When Valarie arrived and saw all of the food being delivered to Ben’s table, she lost it.
“Is this food for you, Ben?”
“No, it’s for both of us.”
As the food was being delivered the waiter brought the champagne.
“Don’t tell me the champagne is for you, Ben.”
“No, it’s for the both of us.”
“Ben have you lost your mind? We have no tires, we have no way to get home, and you’re here spending money in the most expensive place in Oakland on a meal and champagne that we can’t afford. Have you lost it?”
“Listen honey, I lost it 1,000 miles ago. I’ve been running on guts alone. To answer your question, no, I haven’t lost it. I’ve found it. I won $384 and we are going to celebrate with a bottle of champagne and a fine meal before we head back to Fort Worth.”
It was at this point that Valarie realized she had married Superman and she believe that he would find his place on top of the golf world as the greatest player who ever played.
